Editor's Choice 2025 | Conceptual and Empirical Advances in Ecology

Our Virtual Issue compiling the Editor's Choices of 2025 has been published!

Oikos brings together research spanning systems, scales, and subdisciplines, with a strong emphasis on conceptual, empirical, and theoretical advances. The papers featured in this Editor’s Choice collection showcase work published in 2025 that reflects this breadth, engaging ecologists across general ecology while advancing understanding of ecological mechanisms, processes, and patterns. Many integrate across ecology and related disciplines to address ecological, environmental, or societal challenges.

The Issue is organised in four themes:

  • Theme 1 - Conceptual, Theoretical, and Methodological Foundations

  • Theme 2 - Eco-evolutionary Dynamics and Trait-Based Processes

  • Theme 3 - Species Interactions and Network Rewiring

  • Theme 4 - Ecosystem Functioning, Biodiversity, and Global Change

Collectively, these contributions highlight the range and depth of contemporary ecological research published in Oikos. We hope this collection serves both as a celebration and as a source of inspiration for future work in ecology, reflecting the role of Oikos as a society journal dedicated to serving the ecological community through conceptual insight and broad relevance.
